The Federal Government on Wednesday said it is doing everything within its power to stop the spread of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria.

At an emergency meeting with state governors, presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan, the need for everyone to walk in unison to overcome the virus was emphasized.

President Jonathan dispelled rumour of the spread of the virus, noting that provision for isolation centers ,surveillance in every state, and laboratory for diagnosis has been made all over the country.

Some governors said Nigerians should be sensitised thoroughly so that they know what to do at any point in time, stressing the need for the provision of equipment for health workers and life insurance cover for health workers.

They further blamed the challenge on transparency and openness.

The Country Representative of World Health Organisation (WHO), Rui Vazwho, commended the declaration that Ebola in Nigeria is a national emergency. While his counterpart in the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Abuja, Abdulsalami Nasidi said Nigeria is ahead in the effort to deal with the virus.

The meeting also brought to the fore the importance of keeping decent personal hygeine as exemplified by the president and the governors present in the meeting. They urged Nigerians not to panic and not to be pretentious about it as concrete actions are being taken to defeat the virus.

The Federal Government had requested for an untested drug, Zmapp, believed to be efficient in the treatment of Ebola virus from the United States but had not gotten any concrete response.

On Tuesday, the World Health Organization supported the use of untested drugs for the treatment of the disease, which the Nigerian government said its outbreak was a National Emergency.

As part of efforts to contain the disease, which has claimed three lives in Lagos State, President Goodluck Jonathan set up an intervention plan with 1.9 billion Naira approved for the control of the disease.
