Manufacturers of cement and Sandcrete block are now to comply to new set of regulations or risk their products being confiscated.
A body established to monitor products quality and ensure they are up to standard, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, is to ensure the enforcement of the new policy, which is coming days after a building collapse in the premises of the Synagogue Church Of All Nations in Lagos left over 85 persons dead.
From October 1, random checks will be conducted on on-going projects across the country to ascertain durability while Cement bags must now carry clear inscription of product quality and specification.
This move, according to the Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Mr Sam Ortom, is to make material testing easy during investigation and also ensure safer building structures.
He told reporters on Tuesday that the new development was a government’s decision aimed at checking the increasing cases of building collapse.
The Senate had in its plenary mandate a committee to investigate the cases of building collapse it said it had been on the increase with the last two years.
