Some leaders of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, have rejected the decision of the party to zone the governorship ticket of Akwa Ibom State to Eket in the 2015 general elections.
Former governor, Victor Attah and Board of Trustees member, Don Etiebet, rejected the decision of the state chapter of the ruling party and urged the national leadership of the party to allow internal democracy to prevail in choosing the flag-bearer of the party for the February 2015 governorship elections.
Addressing a news conference in Abuja, the two party chieftains said that the absence of a level playing field might affect the fortunes of the party in the 2015 elections.
There had been a war of words between the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom State and some chieftains of the party over the choice of flag bearer for the governorship elections
The State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, said that all the three senatorial districts in Akwa Ibom State must be allowed to take their turn to produce a governor and therefore endorsed the zoning of the governorship seat to Eket Senatorial District for the 2015 elections.
While the decision to zone the governorship seat to Eket Senatorial District received the blessings of the National Working Committee of the party, the decision was rejected by the party leaders in the state who feared the decision might cause the party to lose the governorship election.
However, the question of who becomes the flag bearer of the People’s Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom State might have to wait until the primaries are conducted.
