INECThe Ekiti State Police Commissioner, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, has asked police officers to ensure that they remain neutral ahead of the 2015 general elections in Nigeria.

Speaking at the awareness forum organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Ekiti State, Mr Lakanu said that election has been a veritable tool for installing democratic system of government all over the world.

He noted that it was, therefore, important to constantly teach security agents about what they should be doing at every point in time, commending INEC for the organising the forum.

Speaking to Channels Television, he said, “We are prepared, we are ready. Its part of our training programme.

“The Inspector-General of Police has assured us that he will provide all necessary and we are ready to make sure that elections are conducted peacefully in the state.”

On his part, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti State, Mr Halilu Pai, believes that the concept of election security is all embracing and indispensable to the conduct of free, fair and credible elections.

“The issue first is to secure the environment that is should be conducive for free, fair election and this will include pre-election period, election day and even post-election day activities.

“So we want them to be aware of those roles so that it will enhance their own job themselves, because it is said that knowledge is power.

“Once they know what they are supposed to do, they will do it humanly, with decorum without being overzealous.”
