CPC-Consumers

ConsumersDirector-General of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC), Dupe Atoki, says the CPC has been given the mandate to provide speedy redress concerning consumers’ complaints, particularly on goods and services.

During a conversation on Channels Television, Atoki advised consumers to be careful and spend wisely as the Yuletide draws near, giving an assurance that the CPC would be on ground to monitor things.

She said that consumers can reach the CPC on issues bothering them via the CPC’s social media and phone lines.

In an attempt to further educate the public, she highlighted check points like ‘Best Before’ and ‘Expiry Date’ on products and steps to take in case of complaints.

The CPC DG also explained the CPC’s role in conjunction with other agencies like NAFDAC, SON and NCAA, noting that there had been a misinterpretation of the law concerning the individual roles of these agencies.

“NAFDAC does not have the power to prosecute defaulters but simply to check product compliance to standards. Prosecution is the function of the CPC,” she affirmed.

Citing electricity distribution as a matter of concern, she noted that the CPC has direct influence over whatever had to do with services.

The DG encouraged users to report any dissatisfaction with power distribution, as the CPC has the authority to handle such matters.

Atoki also spoke on the development in the CPC since she assumed of office. She said that they had become visible as they have been able to educate the public about products, as well as put industries in order.

She reiterated the position of the agency to prosecute anybody found wanting, especially those who refuse to honour a summon by her agency.
