courtThe Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal lodged before it by the immediate past Governor of Bayelsa state, Mr. Timipre Sylva, seeking to sack the incumbent Governor, Seriake Dickson from office.

A five-man panel of Justices of the Apex court, led by Justice Muhammed Muntaka Coomasie, in their unanimous judgment, upheld the concurrent decisions of both the Federal High Court in Yenagoa and the  Court  ‎of Appeal, as it dismissed Mr. Sylva’s suit for want of merit.

The court maintained that the former governor lacked the right to question the conduct of an election in which he did not take part as a contestant.

The Supreme Court also ordered Mr Sylva to pay N500,000 damages to the incumbent governor.

In the meantime, Governor Dickson has applauded the decision by the Supreme Court, describing it as “a victory for democracy, the rule of law, the government and the people of Bayelsa State”.

The governor also extolled the nation’s judiciary for its uprightness and firmness.

He noted that, it has remained a dependable and reliable component of Nigeria’s democracy.
