ECOWAS PresidentThe Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has received with deep satisfaction, the declaration of the results of the March 28 Presidential elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

ECOWAS noted the peaceful and transparent conduct of the election and congratulates the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and also commended the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and incumbent President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, for accepting the results and congratulating the winning candidate.

A statement issued by the President of the Republic of Ghana and the Chair of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, John Dramani Mahama, reads; “On behalf of the Community, I wish to congratulate the Government and people of Nigeria on this great achievement.

“ECOWAS also notes the high sense of duty and professionalism exhibited by the Independent National Electoral Commission led by Professor Attahiru Jega, which was a significant factor in the success of the elections.”

The Union commended the people of Nigeria for the determination and courage demonstrated throughout the period of the elections.

“This is a clear indication of the collective commitment of the Nigerian stakeholders towards strengthening democracy and good governance in line with our Community Protocols.”

The Union also urged all political parties, candidates, their supporters and the general public to accept the verdict of the electoral commission, continue to observe the atmosphere of peace and employ exclusively legal and constitutional means to seek redress for any grievances.
