Ihiala electoral officersThe Independent National Electoral Commission in Nigeria has suspended two electoral officers in Edo State in connection with their roles in the March 28 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

At a pre-governorship election meeting on Wednesday in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Mike Igini tried to address issues that have been raised by different parties in the state after the presidential election.

He said that the Independent National Electoral Commission had decided to conduct fresh elections in five local government areas in addition to Orhionmwon LGA which was suspended to determine the winner for Edo South Senatorial district election

The elections in those areas were rejected by some party members.

While the meeting was going on, some supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party held a protest outside the premises, insisting that the results of elections held in Orhionmwon should be upheld.

But the INEC official insisted that the elections would be re-conducted on April 11 in Orhionmwon and other polling units in four other local councils.

“The ballot papers and result sheets for some of these areas are intact and untouched. There will be election in those areas on Saturday,” he said.

Party members raised issues with the plan to re-conduct elections in some areas, where they claimed voting took place, presenting result sheets, which they also claimed were stamped and signed by the electoral commission’s officials.
