According to the Country Representative of the WHO, Mr Rui Gama Vaz, Nigeria has made much progress in interrupting vaccine preventable diseases including Hepatitis B, Polio and Measles.

He however urged government to take advantage of the African Vaccination Week,  which is an annual event commemorated every last week of April to strengthen her immunization system through effective advocacy.

The WHO has coordinated the commemoration of the African Vaccination Week since 2011.

Meanwhile, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) said this year’s African Vaccination Exercise will concentrate on Internally Displaced People across the country.

Over 7 million children are targeted for immunization this year, with vaccines imported from other countries.

Over 23 million children were vaccinated against Measles and other vaccine preventable diseases across Africa in 2013.

In Nigeria, over six hundred thousand deaths are prevented annually through immunization.
