DesertificationA bill seeking to give legal backing for the establishment of an agency to address problems of land degradation and desertification has passed second reading in the Senate.

The National Agency for the Great Green Wall Establishment bill received vast support from federal lawmakers at Wednesday’s plenary session.

The Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba had made a statement on the direct effects of climate change on Nigeria and food security in the country.

It was for this reason that Nigeria proposed the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel initiative in 2005 to address the problems of land degradation and desertification in the Sahara and Sahel region.

According to Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, all other countries that have signed the convention on the Great Green Wall initiative have established their national agencies except Nigeria.

He said that it was imperative that the National Assembly gives legal backing for the actualization of the programme.

The bill eventually passed second reading and was sent to the relevant committees for further legislative work.
