NIMC-workers-protestStaff of the management of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have staged a protest against an alleged plan by the agency to retrench over 1,000 staff.

The commission debunked the claims,  saying the management  would only retrench staff with fake employment letters.

Spokesman for the NIMC, Abdulwaheed Umar, told reporters on Tuesday that the affected workers had been given an opportunity to regularise their employment which they failed to do.

The protesting workers took to the streets in Abuja on Tuesday, demanding that the agency should jettison the plan.

The Secretary of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Isaac Ojemhenke, criticised the management of the commission for the planned exercise, just as the FCT chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Aliyu Musa, bemoaned the working conditions of workers in the commission.

The General Manager, Corporate Communications of the Commission, Abdulwaheed Umar, however, denied the claims of the workers, saying the management is only sanitising the commission by enforcing minimum standards and work ethics.

With the aggrieved workers shutting down the headquarters of the commission in Abuja, Nigerians, who want to collect their National Identity Cards, may have to wait, as the workers have vowed to keep the place under lock and key until the retrenchment exercise is reversed.
