Chogozie UbaniA security consultant has stressed the need for police officers in Nigeria to be battle ready, with adequate attention paid to their physic.

Mr Chogozie Ubani told Channels Television on Monday that the police force had paid less attention to the physical look and fitness of officers, which were vital in performing their duty.

“The police need to do a lot of profiling. A lot of background check of elements within the force. I am convinced that a lot of bad eggs are still within the rank and file.

“We need to work on the physical appearance of the security men.

“Our pot-bellied security men need to be purged. They need to get physically ready for the challenges ahead of them.

“In the early 80s we use to see policemen jogging on the highway, doing 10 to 15 kilometres. Some overhaul is required. Then training is required,” he said.

Post-election Security

Mr Ubani further warned that the police had a lot of work to do to ensure that post-election security challenges would not arise.

According to him, thugs that may have been armed by desperate politicians would pose huge security challenge in months to come.

He urged the police to increase surveillance and introduce a system that would pay persons for information they give the police.

The security consultant also expressed worries that Defence Industries Corporation Of Nigeria produces salt instead of military equipment.

“I wrote an article and sent to some authorities that the Defence Industries Corporation Of Nigeria producing salt is belittling. It is a defence industry and we cannot be talking about importation of boots, helmets and some enemies of the country frustrating us from getting equipment,” he said.

On the current security situation in the north-east, he said that if adequate information about the sponsors of the Boko Haram could be obtained it would be possible to say if they were running out of arms.

He was confident that the Boko Haram was retreating, but warned that their retreat should not be misunderstood for lack of arms.
