policeA lawmaker representing Igalamela/Odolu Constituency in Kogi State House of Assembly, Friday Sanni, has been arrested by men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Abuja.

The lawmaker was arrested on Friday evening while on a business transaction at Nsukka, the eastern part of the country.

It is not the first time the lawmaker has been arrested over the charges of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery by the Police. His arrest is said to have almost become a yearly occurrence and for the same offence.

In a press briefing at the NUJ press center hall Lokoja, his counsel, John Adele, strongly condemned what he termed an unlawful behaviour by the Police, saying the arrest of the lawmaker based on trumped up charges violated the fundamental rights of his client.

The legal practitioner enjoined the Police not to allow themselves to be used based on frivolous petitions and allegations, stressing the need for the new Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, not to interfere with legal and political matters.

A former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  in the local government, Isah Adejoh, was also at the briefing along with relatives of the lawmaker.

As at press time, moves to seek for his bail had been concluded but it was not clear if he would be charged to court.
