Bukola-Saraki-Nigeria-Senate-PresidentThe Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has advocated for global effort against terrorism and insurgency in north-east Nigeria.

In an interview with Channels Television on the sidelines of the Inter-Parliamentary meeting in New York, Senator Saraki acknowledged the devastating effect of terrorism across the world, including Nigeria, which has led to the displacement of millions of people.

The Senate President expressed hope that the meeting would highlight the issues of terrorism and insurgency as a global problem, in a bid to double the efforts of finding a lasting solution.

“Terrorism should not be left for individual countries to address. We must see it as a global issue, not even regional. We should not select which part of the world that is more important to us.

“Anywhere that there is terrorism, it should be seen as a global challenge,” Senator Saraki said.

Conflicts in Syria, Libya, Iraq, Nigeria to name a few, have led to the displacement of millions of people around the world

Hundreds of migrants have been killed, as they attempted to flee war torn countries seeking asylum in Europe.

At the ongoing fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, the UN Secretary General urged parliamentarians to work for peace in their respective countries.

In Nigeria and surrounding countries, over one million persons have been displaced because of attacks by terrorists notably, the Boko Haram.

In July, UN member states met in Addis Ababa to adopt framework for financing sustainable development.

Earlier this month, member states took a bold step in this direction by concluding Negotiations on an ambitious and sustainable development agenda for the next 15 years.

However Nigeria’s Senate President is of the view that these new goals would not be achieved without the involvement of parliaments.
