ndleaThe Kaduna State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has destroyed a total of 12, 366 kilogrammes of narcotic substances seized from illicit drug peddlers and consumers.

The destroyed drugs were cannabis sativa otherwise called Indian Hemp, Psychotropic substances, cocaine and heroin.

Speaking during the destruction of the illicit substances in Zaria, Chairman of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, announced the discovery of 10 laboratories used by drug barons for the production of a psychotropic drug called Methamphetamine in Lagos and Onitsha; in Anambra State.

He expressed worry over the high rate of drug abuse and peddling among the youths, a situation he said placed a heavy burden on the nation’s security.

Lamenting the harm being done to the society by drug trafficking and consumption, the NDLEA Chairman noted that majority of the crimes being committed in the country were drug related.

He, however, called on the public to assist the Agency in the anti-drug campaign aimed at eliminating such social vices in the society.

The 2015 World Drug Law Report according to the NDLEA, revealed that a total of 246 million people between the ages of 15 and 64 years are into the use of illicit drugs while one out of every 10 drug users suffer from psychological problems.

This figure, according to Mr Giade is very alarming and needs concerted efforts to address.

Between January to June 2015, the Kaduna State Command of the Agency has arrested 89 persons for drug-related offences and seized over 15 tons of such illicit substances worth over N100 million from them.

The seizure was the highest ever made by the Agency in the entire Northern Nigeria.

The Kaduna State NDLEA Commander, Samuel Azige, said that with enough operational vehicles and other logistics from the government, the Command would discharge its duties effectively.

While responding to what the Commander said, Governor Nasir El-Rufai commended the NDLEA for its effort to rid the society of drug barons and consumers and promised to support the NDLEA with operational vehicles and other logistics.

The former Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) boss also urged the Agency to conclude the extradition process of Mr Buruji Kashamu to the United States for trial over alleged drug-related offences.
