Ogun-students4Students of the four state-owned tertiary institutions in Osun State have taken to the streets protesting the nine months closure of their institutions.

The students, on Monday, trooped out in large number and embarked on a walk to the Osun State House of Assembly and the government secretariat, Abere to register their grievances and seeking to know why the lecturers and the government were yet to resolve the crisis holding back the reopening of their schools.

But the protesting students met with Police resistance.

Policemen allegedly shot tear gas at the students to force them into retreat, leaving many of them injured and some arrested.

Channels Television’s correspondent reported that the fracas between the students and the Police lasted for about one hour, causing traffic gridlock on the Osogbo-Gbongan road, as the students refused to back down.

The Osun State Chief of Staff, Gboyega Oyetola, who later addressed the students amidst protest, gave the assurance that those arrested would be released and the issue of the lecturers’ demands could only be resolved when the lecturers resume to classes.

Lecturers of the four state-owned tertiary institutions have been on strike for about nine months demanding for full payment of their outstanding salaries, stoppage of the contributory pension scheme and full payment of their migration and promotion allowances.
