KadunaThe Kaduna State Government has proposed a draft bill on drug control and usage as part of efforts to stop the abuse of narcotics and unconventional substances among the youth.

This is the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday, October 27.

The Kaduna State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Amina Sijuwade, said in a statement at the end of the meeting that the bill signals the government’s intention to adopt new approaches in the fight against crime and rescuing young people from the dangers of drug abuse.

The statement explained that the drug control law provides for measures to prevent substance abuse as well as the treatment and rehabilitation of users.

According to the Commissioner, the bill would provide guidelines for voluntary counselling and treatment as well as ensuring that the rights and dignity of persons undergoing treatment and rehabilitation are well protected.

According to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kaduna is among the states with a large number of drug addicts and traffickers.
