Erosion Control: Ministry Decries World Bank's Approval DelayThe Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mrs Fatima Nana, says delay in approving engineering designs by the World Bank has limited the implementation of Erosion Control Projects across affected states in Nigeria.

Mrs Nana gave the hint while receiving a delegation of the World Bank, who were in Nigeria for a mid-term review of the implementation of the Nigerian Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).

According to the government official, “constructions of drainage system has commenced in most states but the delay in getting approvals from the World Bank could slow the pace of implementation if not addressed”.

A representative of the World Bank, Mr Amos Abu, said the visit was not just to carry out a mid-term review of the program but also to seek policy guidance on further implementation of the program.

NEWMAP is a jointly funded erosion control program which was launched in 2012 to address worsening problem of erosion in Nigeria.
