KogiIt is the D-day on Saturday in Kogi State as citizens above the age of 18 vote for their choice governor to lead them for the next four years.

The city of Lokoja, the state capital is calm and other adjoining towns are reported to be in an election mood.

There is heavy security presence in the state with the Police leading with 15,000 men on ground.

Soldiers are also deployed for the election but our correspondent covering the election said that they can only be seen at the entrance and exit points of the city of Lokoja.

There is also report of heavy commercial activities as many are trying to be the deadline on restriction of movement which is midnight on Friday.

Like in several other states, fuel scarcity is said to be biting hard.

The Kogi governorship election would be the first to be held under the new administration and under the new INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has also assured residents of a hitch-free and credible poll.

Twenty-two candidates will be contesting in the November 21 election on the platform of their different registered political parties

Some of the top contenders in the Kogi governorship race include the incumbent and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Captain Idris Wada, who will be in a tough race with a former Governor and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abubakar Audu.

Philips Salawu, a former Deputy Governor to the immediate past Governor of the state, Ibrahim Idris, is the candidate of the Labour Party.

Over 1.3 million voters are expected to participate in the exercise.
