Resident Doctors Give FG 21 Days Ultimatum

DoctorsSome medical doctors in Nigeria have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to provide the much needed political will to effectively reform and improve the health sector.

An effective reform in the sector would improve service delivery for the good of the citizens, they said.

The doctors made the call on Friday at a scientific conference held by the Association of Resident Doctors in Sagamu, Ogun State, in south-west Nigeria, with the theme; “The Doctor, A Nation Builder”.

While calling for the quick passage of the National Mental Health Bill before the National Assembly, the doctors also bemoaned the paltry 15% of Nigerians in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and Drag Net, asking the Federal Government to reconsider the figure.

The scientific conference brought together consultants, head of departments, members of the Association of Resident Doctors and medical students.

They also held talks on how to ensure best practices in the profession, with the Chief Medical Director, Dr Familoni Oluranti and the lead speaker, Fela Durotoye, stressing the role of the health sector in building a strong nation.

They stressed the need for all medical practitioners to show more commitment to their duties and make inputs that would help improve the health sector.

Participants also commented on issues perceived to be responsible for the near comatose the health sector has found itself, with the issue of adequate funding also considered.
