UNFPA Urges More Support For IDPsThe United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) has asked the Federal Government to give more attention to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nigeria.

The call was made by the Country Representative of UNFPA, Mrs Ratidzai Ndlovu, at the 2015 State of World Population held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Estimating that Nigeria has 2.2 million displaced persons, Mrs Ndlovu indicated that the attention on the IDPs camps might be fading as well as the funding.

She urged the Federal Government to place emphasis on improving better health services for the growing number of IDPs in the troubled northern Nigeria.

In his speech, the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Eze Duruiheoma, pointed out that the number of victims suffering from attacks by the Boko Haram sect was increasing as Nigeria’s population grow steadily.

Although, the UNFPA had so far assisted thousands of women give birth and work independently on acquired skills, the NPC boss appealed to the government for more help to close the support gap for the growing number of IDPs.

The number of displacement in the country which was previously more than one million as at December 2014 had increased owing to recent attacks by the insurgents in the north-east.
