tourismThe World Tourism Organization, an agency of the United Nations mandated to promote accessible tourism, has released figures showing a continuous expansion of the tourism industry globally over the past six decades.

International tourist arrivals increased from 25 million in 1950 to 1133 million in 2014 while earnings moved from two billion dollars to 1245 billion dollars in 2014.

Arrivals worldwide is expected to hit 1.8 billion and emerging economies, which captures Nigeria, are expected to get 57% of this market share.

Efforts to develop these potential led to the inauguration of a tourism master plan in 2006 with the objective of launching the sector as a viable economic alternative.

Another very important element in the Nigerian tourism sector is the National Theatre, built in 1976 in preparation for the Festival of Arts and Culture, FESTAC in 1977.

The Federal Government has promised to develop the culture and tourism industry and the stakeholders await the performance of the promises of the Minister.

Nigerians as a whole await other promises such as development of the potentials in sites and festivals for revenue generation in the non-oil sector.
