2016 budgetThe House of Representatives says it is working towards passing the 2016 budget in the second week of March.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, gave the proposed period at a budget defense session in the National Assembly on Monday.

The Chairman disclosed that the House Appropriation Committee would begin engaging the standing committees of the House to receive their reports and compile them for onward forwarding to the plenary by next week.

The 2016 budget is at the center of a huge controversy, as the National Assembly had accused the Federal Government, ministries and agencies of padding the budget.

The National Assembly had on February 9 said an earlier set date of February 25 for the passage of the 2016 budget was not feasible.

Addressing a news conference in Abuja, the chairmen of the Senate and House of Representatives committees on Appropriation, Senator Danjuma Goje and Honourable Jibrin said the February 25 target for the passage of the 2016 budget was no longer realistic.

The two lawmakers said that the National Assembly observed during the ongoing budget defence that government ministries had padded their budgets and because of this, lawmakers require more time to thoroughly work on the budget.
