The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the national and state assembly re-run elections slated for Saturday February 20, till further notice.
Briefing reporters on Friday at the INEC office in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, the Administrative Secretary of the electoral body in the state, Evurulobi Chinedu, said the decision to postpone the election was taken after a careful assessment of the security situation on ground.
Earlier on Friday, a massive protest erupted at the headquarters of the commission, as some irate youths called for the immediate cancellation and postponement of the rerun election.
The youths in their hundreds barricaded the main entrance of the office in the state, alleging that some INEC staff were bias.
The commission, however, debunked the allegations levelled against it, saying it remains committed to giving all political parties a level playing ground in the elections.
