ArmyThe Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, says he is confident that Boko Haram will be eliminated in Nigeria, as troops fighting insurgents in the northeast are doing so with utmost commitment and renewed zeal.

He gave the assurance on Tuesday at the office of the Oyo State Governor during his one-day familiarisation tour of the Two Division of Nigerian Army, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Odogbo in Ibadan.

According to Buratai, the intensity of the onslaught against terrorism has been increased and this has resulted in the noticeable reduction of attacks in the region.

Although, it may seem unending to many Nigerians who have had to cope with the consequences of the Boko Haram terror, he added that the military was committed to ending the insurgency.

“Terrorism is a global phenomenon. It may seem unending but I want to assure you that here in Nigeria, we are working hard to ensure that the Boko Haram terrorists are completely eliminated. We still have some remnants of them but we are closing up and clearing them by the day,” he said.

Citizens’ Support

Buratai, however, stated that for the country to totally wipe out the terrorists, it required the support of the citizenry while stressing that the “insurgents live among the people and they are everywhere”.

Army“This requires intelligence to fish them out. But the most important thing is to get them out, and prevent them from building the capacity to launch attacks on innocent individuals and indeed on our troops.

“In the long run, it will require a long term planning, long term surveillance and long term intelligence gathering so that the remnants can be picked, apart from those that will show up with their weapons, which we are dealing with right now,” Buratai said.

The Army chief attributed the success recorded in the war on terror to the political commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari, the government, the leadership of the military and the troops on ground as well as support from Nigerians.

ArmyHe said that the Motorbike Battalion established by the Nigerian Army had added more capacity and the ability to move quickly to wherever insurgents were.

In his remark, the Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, who was represented by his deputy, Moses Adeyemo, expressed delight at the recent feat achieved by the Army in suppressing the insurgents.

He urged the military not to relent until peace is restored to all affected areas.

Earlier at the Two Mechanised Division, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, the General Officer Commanding, Major General Laz Ilo, led the Chief of Army staff to commission a newly built single officers transit chalet and an 18-bedded Buratai chalet at the cantonment.
