The Department of State Services (DSS) has presented Hon. Akanni Afolabi, a member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly before newsmen in Abuja.
The DSS said that it arrested the Ekiti lawmaker a few weeks ago over some serious breaches bordering on state security which falls under the purview of the DSS to investigate.
Earlier, the Ekiti State Government had announced the death of Hon. Akanni Afolabi in the DSS custody.
Speaking at a press conference in the state capital, Ado-Ekiti, Commissioner for Information, Lanre Ogunsuyi, said that Hon Akanni Afolabi was unlawfully arrested by the Department of State Security.
Members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly have also called on the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to intervene on the arrest and detention of four members of the Ekiti House by the DSS.
Chairman of the House Committee on Health, Mr Samuel Omotosho, who led the delegation, expressed frustration at how the Department of State Services has made it impossible for the detained members to have access to their families and lawyers.
On his part, the Director of Media in the Commission, Mr Lambert Okpara, assured the delegation that an investigation would be conducted into the matter.
