Ogun State Partners With Germany On Rural Electrification

amosun Ogun State GovernorThe Ogun State government is in partnership with the German Government to improve power situation in rural communities in the state and enhance rapid development.

According to the Ogun state government, the partnership is aimed at bringing real development to the rural communities and reducing rural-urban migration.

The concrete steps toward power generation, through mini-grids, as an electrification instrument, is beginning with the training of some state officials on public-private participation for mini-grid development in rural communities of the state.

The German government is providing the training.

Senior officials of ministries, parastatals and government agencies and electrical engineers are being trained by the German Government to provide specific models and frameworks to improve mini-grids as an electrification instrument

Raise Standard Of Living

Representing the State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, at the one-day training session, the state Deputy Governor, Mrs Yetunde Onanuga, reiterated the commitment of the government towards rural development to raise the standard of living of the rural populace.

Nigeria with a population of about 170 million people requires at least 14,000 megawatts of electricity.

Currently, 4,000 megawatts is being generated, with its attendant negative effects as manifested in high cost of finished goods and unemployment among others.

The rural communities are not immune from this wide gap, a shortfall that the Ogun State government and the German government are trying to reduce.

To ensure the success of the project, the state government has expressed its willingness to partner with relevant government agencies and genuine private operators to ensure a sustainable transformation of the state’s rural landscape.

Since the government cannot meet up with the challenge of rural electrification through the connection to the national-grid, mini-grids as an electrification instrument should be adequately explored and encouraged.
