The German government has offered to assist Nigeria in training its security agencies and also exchange intelligence that will help the fight against insurgency in the northeast.
The offer is part of efforts to curb terrorists’ activities in Nigeria.
The Deputy Minister of Defence of Germany, Dr. Ralf Brauksiepe, made the German government’s decision known in Abuja on Monday while delivering a lecture at the National Defence College.
Dr. Brauksiepe said the effect of globalisation required effective cooperation of all countries, as terrorism remained a major threat to humanity.
The German envoy decried the increasing cases of piracy, poverty and organised crime in Africa.

He promised that Germany would continue to support African countries in the fight against terrorism, piracy and other forms of criminality creating conflict.
“Nigeria can explain and specify its needs and there is a considerable sum of money that is donated by the German foreign office and the Defence Minister and we have arranged with the Defence Ministry today that we will specify the needs and bring the needs and the capabilities together for Nigeria,” the German envoy told reporters.
The Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral Samuel Alade, recollected the relationship between Germany and Nigeria, saying it had been mutually beneficial to both countries.
At the end of the lecture, the German Minister and the Commandant said the benefit of military cooperation between Germany and Nigeria was enormous.
With the issue of global terrorism, piracy and maritime security remaining a major challenge, the National Defence College participants drawn from different parts of Africa are expected to come up with policies that would help address some of these challenges.
