Reuben Abati, YouthsA former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Rueben Abati, has advised youths in Nigeria to take interest in politics.

Dr. Abati, who made the call at a gathering on Wednesday in Abuja, asked the youths to register with political parties of their choice.

He advised the youths to be well armed educationally, if they must take charge of affairs of governance.

Abati explained that non-inclusion of youths in Nigeria’s developmental process led to the marginalisation and under-development in some cases.

In her speech, a former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, said that the statistics from the National Population Commission showed that the youths constitute at least 65 per cent of the population, wondering how their expertise could be harnessed.

Another speaker at the event, Hamza Farouq, criticised the five billion Naira Special Intervention Fund set aside for the youth by the Federal Government.

He insisted that a large chunk of the funds should have been channeled into the agricultural sector and youth development.

Nigeria is yet to attain the acceptable percentage of youths in governance as many Nigerians would be eager to see steps taken to address the issue.

While the clamour for the inclusion of youths in governance increases, some speakers at the event believed that they should first be involved in the activities of political parties.
