Iraqi ForcesReports say Iraqi government forces have retaken most of the city of Fallujah from Islamic State militants who have held it since 2014.

US Defence Secretary, Ash Carter, says there is “still some fighting to be done” as Isis still controls certain parts of the city.

But Iraq’s Prime Minister hailed the day’s events as a “liberation”.

A senior army spokesperson said he expects Isis to “suffer a total breakdown during the next hours”.

Fallujah which lies only 50 kilometres west of Baghdad, has been held by Isis for longer than any other city in Iraq or Syria.
