Olusegun Obasanjo, Telecommunications, NigeriaA former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, has described as unconstitutional and abuse of the process the usurpation of local government functions and duties by state governments in Nigeria.

He says such act has hampered the necessary development at the grassroots

The former President was speaking at a meeting with the national leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees led by its national president, Mr Ibraheem Khaleel.

The meeting was held on Wednesday at his presidential hilltop residence in the state capital, Abeokuta.

Members of the union sought his support and understanding on the issue of autonomy for local government.

While expressing his displeasure over the current challenges being faced by the third tier of government across Nigeria, the former president, however, appealed to state governments and members of State and National Assemblies to ensure the sanctity and constitutionality of the local government administration.
