Lagos State, lekki free zoneThe Lagos state government has approved a 740.4 million naira compensation package, for displaced residents of the Lekki Free Zone, proposed site for the new international airport.

The Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Mr Rotimi Ogunleye, explained that this is to create a cordial relationship between the state government and the host communities as well as investors.

He announced this during a news conference held in Ikeja on Thursday.

Before the parcels of land were acquired, they were being used as farming sites by families within the host communities.

According to him, modalities are being put in place to ensure a hitch-free disbursement of the money as well as mutual understanding between the government and the people.

Mr Ogunleye while further explaining the plans, said that “the government conceptualised a deep seaport and an international airport as complementary projects”.

He added that the land acquired for the airport was about 4,000 hectares, while that of the deep seaport was about 590 hectares.

This according to him, “would leverage on the massive production activities in the zone, with the added facilities for air and sea transportation”.

Opportunities Abound

In furtherance of the new development, the Commissioner said the government had continued to engage the communities to convince them on the multiplier effects of the project.

According to him, this has potentials of generating massive employment opportunities as well as a high socio-economic value on the lives of the people.

He also added that about 65 million naira was paid to land owners affected by some ongoing projects in the state, few months prior to the project execution.

Some of the projects include a petrochemical plant, a fertilizer plant and a refinery.

He assured both local and foreign investors that all projects in the zone were running smoothly and encouraged more investors to come on board.

Mr. Ogunleye said more land owners would be compensated in due course at the end of verification and valuation.
