Unidentified youths suspected to be from Awarra community in Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area of Imo state, have invaded a hospital in Owerri, causing heavy destruction of property worth millions.
Victims of the unfortunate event are already counting their losses as six cars have purportedly been burnt down with four others badly shattered while four people were left injured.
An eyewitness, Elias Anumudu, said that the youths, in their numbers, invaded the Imo State Specialist Hospital, claiming that the corpse of one of their kinsmen who was killed by a local vigilante, was kept in the hospital mortuary.
Anumudu said that the unidentified youths stormed the hospital premises around 2:00pm, shortly after the corpse was deposited at the hospital mortuary.
Also corroborating the story, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Francis Egwuekwe, confirmed that apart from the wanton destruction of property, several people were also wounded.
“If not for the quick intervention of security operatives, more devastation would have occurred,” he added.
The Imo state Commissioner Of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, who visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment, described the incident as “an unfortunate one”, saying that “investigation has commenced to determine the real cause of the invasion”.
He also gave the assurance that all perpetrators would be brought to book.
Although calm seemed to have been restored in the premises, a lot of questions are still being asked about the motives behind the attack.
