House of Representatives, Reps, KidnappingThe House of Representatives says concrete action must be taken to check the spate of kidnapping in Nigeria.

The lawmakers made the call for a state of emergency to be declared on kidnapping on Wednesday after a debate on a motion of urgent national importance on the need to declare a state of emergency on kidnapping across the country.

The motion was raised by a member of the House from Ondo State, Representative Babatunde kolawole and supported by some of his colleagues including; Ado Dogowa, Emmanuel Orker-Jev and Adam Jagaba.

After deliberations on the issue on the floor of the House in Abuja, lawmakers unanimously agreed that the crime had taken an alarming dimension with the kidnapping of school children.

The House called for a security summit that would fashion an effective response to the kidnapping phenomenon.

They said some committees of the House, telecom service providers and all security agencies would take part in the summit.

The lawmakers are making the move after four students, the principal and his vice were kidnapped at the Lagos State Model College in Igbo Nla in Epe area of the state.

They were kidnapped while on the assembly ground on Thursday, October 6.

The kidnappers had demanded 100 million Naira ransom for the victims to regain freedom before the six kidnapped victims were released on Tuesday, October 11.

Some states in Nigeria had established laws that prescribes capital punishment for persons found guilty for kidnapping.
