Uselu market traders, protest, shop demolitionTraders in Uselu market have blocked the Benin-Lagos road in a protest resulting from a demolition exercise carried out on their shops on Monday morning.

The exercise, according to the government, was in a bid to create more spaces for the ongoing construction of the market being built by the Egor Local Government Council.

Under the aegis of the Uselu Market Women Association, the traders trooped out in their numbers saying they were not given prior notice before the demolition, adding also that the shops being built are beyond their reach.

One of the traders said “they want to force us to go into the stores and we have told them that we cannot afford the stores, that is why they are destroying our businesses.

“Even if the country’s economy was okay, how do you expect a woman who sells only salt and Maggi to generate such huge amounts of money”.

All efforts to get authorities of Egor local council to comment on the situation proved abortive, as the Council’s Head of Service was said to be unavailable.

Vehicular traffic has been at a standstill at the Ugbowo Uselu axis of the Benin-Ore road following the protest, while other commuters resorted to trekking to their destination.
