Teachers in Borno StateBorno State government on Tuesday, said it will employ about 5,000 teachers to address shortage of teaching professionals and boost quality education in the state.

The Commissioner of Education, Inuwa Kubo, told reporters in Maiduguri on Tuesday that the plan was to boost the quality of education with a view to resuscitating the lost glory of the sector in the state.

Mr Kubau explained that the new intake would teach core subjects like Mathematics, Physics, English Language, Hausa, Arabic Language and History.

According to the Commissioner, newly introduced subjects such as Civic Education, Computer Studies, and Trade Entrepreneurship would also require specialised teachers.

“While the sector had suffered a great setback following attack on school by Boko Haram insurgents across the state, the government had remained resilient and determined to revolutionise the it,” he stated.

The Commissioner claims that the state government has introduced free feeding in all public schools, as an incentive for enrolment, adding that education has also been made free.

“The government has also introduced 120 shuttle buses that would be transporting pupils to school. Twenty of the buses are already operating within the Maiduguri Metropolis and Jere council while the rest of the 100 will be deployed to the remaining 25 local government areas as soon as normalcy is restored.

The Commissioner, however, bemoaned the reluctance of parents to take advantage of the free education and other incentives to enrol their school age children in school.
