Health, RecessionThe Nigerian Government has been advised to improve on its funding of the health sector projects and schemes to benefit citizens, particularly the less privileged in the face of the recession.

The Provost at the College of Medicine, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Professor Oluwadiya Kehinde, made the recommendation while delivering a lecture in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

He noted that health programmes such as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) should be strengthened, to allow people in the rural areas get affordable medical treatment.

The Provost said since recession has reduced the purchasing power of the people, the intervention of government was essential for them to access health facilities.

He noted that Nigeria’s economic situation has led to increase in the prices of drugs, saying the situation has made people who could not afford them go for cheaper ones which he said were mostly counterfeits.

Professor Oluwadiya encouraged the resident doctors to continue to uphold professionalism in rendering medical service to their ailing patients and also make positive use of the period.

The event was the annual meeting of members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital (LAUTECHTH) where they deliberated on the effect of Nigeria’s economic challenges on the health sector.

The theme for this year’s meeting is the “Impact of Present Economic Challenges on Health Indices in Nigeria and Medical Practice in Nigeria as a Whole”.

The ARD LAUTECHTH President, Dr. Adeyinka Owolabi, said the need to encourage members in understanding Nigeria’s current status informed the topic and the gathering.
