Four suspected cyber crime perpetrators, who specialised in the production of fake Joint Admission and Matriculation Board forms have been arrested in Ekiti State.
In an arrest that the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) called a clear confirmation of a total clampdown on cyber-scammers in Ekiti State, the corps said the suspects were notorious in the printing, selling, manipulating and forging of JAMB registration forms, admission letter as well as changing JAMB registration numbers.
The suspects, all male – Fagade Tope, 29, Akindun Adeniyi, 34 , Ologunja Muyideen, 19 and Duduyemi Patrick, 35 – were arrested in different locations in the state where they were plying their illegal trade and registering students for JAMB examination which registration form is yet to be on sale.
Commenting on the arrest, the NSCDC Commandant in Ekiti, Mr Donatus Ikemefuna, said: “The operations became possible as a result of operational synergy existing between the Corps and JAMB to monitor every operational activities of the examination body including provision of security coverage during JAMB examination in Nigeria.
“The synergy, which led to series of illegal discoveries in manipulation of JAMB registration forms, numbers as well as admission letters, received huge commendation from parents and guardians who have been duped before now”.
Mr Ikemefuna explained that the operation was ongoing and that the corps had arrested four persons in connection with the illegal act directed at shortchanging and defrauding parents, guardian and their wards.
He frowned on the rate at which young men are making use of the internet to defraud many parents and students and opined that the acquired computer skills and knowledge should be directed at improving educational standard and promotion of legal online businesses rather than putting tears on the faces of the people.
The State Commandant, who advised Nigerians to be careful of cyber café and their owners that are selling fake JAMB forms and printing fake admission letters, urged them to patronise registered and accredited JAMB registration centres and report any cyber café or their owners that were in the habit of this sharp practices in the state to the corps.
