Residents Cry Out Over Insecurity In CalabarA police inspector attached to a Chinese expatriate was on Friday shot and killed by gunmen in the Owerri metropolis, Imo State.

Sources said the incident happened shortly after the Chinese expatriate whose name is yet to be identified, is believed to be a contractor in the state, left the banking premises after a business transaction at the branch of a new generation bank located on Item street in Owerri.

The source said the gunmen in the process carted away huge amount of money running into millions which the Chinese expatriate withdrew shortly before the attack.

Narrating the incident, the eyewitness said the foreigner was attacked by the gunmen who were suspected to have been secretly hiding in the vicinity and monitoring their target, they entered his vehicle and immediately laid siege on the foreigner.

One of the sources said “immediately the foreigner was driven out of the bank premises in his black Toyota with the number plate Abuja 723 JR by his driver, the gunmen who were already waiting, double crossed his vehicle. Two of them jumped out of their car and attacked their target swiftly, while the police inspector who made efforts to resist them was shot sporadically until he died,  the foreigner was also shot on his leg.

However, The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezeike confirmed that a police Inspector lost his life while the expatriate whose identity is yet to ascertained, sustained several injuries in the process.

Ezike said “it is unfortunate that we lost an inspector while the expatriate was severely wounded. But I have directed all heads of tactical units of the command to apprehend the suspected culprits”.
