Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has assured residents of food security when the new fertiliser blending plants commence operation.

He gave the assurance when he visited the moribund Nasarawa fertilizer blending plant which is to be upgraded soon as the state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Chinese firm to procure modern plants.

According to the governor, the partnership is very important as it will increase revenue, create jobs and also increase the production of fertilizers that will be sufficient for farmers in the state.

He said, “We can now boast of about five fertilizer blending plants and with each of them producing 30 to 40 thousand metric tonnes per hour, you can imagine the quantum of fertilizer that we would produce.

“We are considering this as a very important project by the state government. One, to create revenue generation. Two, to provide employment opportunities and three, to also service our farmers.”

The governor also assured farmers in the state that there will be a fair distribution of fertilizer produced in the state.

“It is not going to be fertilizer procurement and supply as usual; the people you see here are specialists not only in the production of equipment but in soil science. They have now assured us that Nasarawa state will use customised fertilizer for our soil,” he said.

“We are likely going to have new names in Fertilizer that are dedicated for legumes, cereals and citrus. These are specialisation that will increase our yield and also enhance food security.”
