Tom Cruise hit Hollywood on Saturday, unveiling a giant sarcophagus as part of a promotion for his upcoming film, “The Mummy.”

The action star pressed a button, revealing a 75-foot, 7-ton statue at Los Angeles’ Hollywood and Highland shopping centre.

In the film, Cruise fights to save the world from an ancient princess, played by Sofia Boutella, who is awakened in the modern day and seeks revenge on mankind.

Cruise, along with Boutella, both spoke about the history of “The Mummy” franchise, which stretches back to the 1932 original film starring Boris Karloff.

“I was very excited to have the opportunity to be part of this, to make it modern for this time, and it was something that, it’s got, it’s very intense. It’s got a lot of adventure in the film. Also, it’s very funny. We’re really playing with a lot of tones. It was very exciting to be part of this.”

Boutella, who hailed the iconic role played by Boris Karloff in the original, said playing a role in the new movie was not without its pressure.

“Boris Karloff playing those roles, those iconic roles in playing the mummy, went down in the history of movie making and I now playing this role over 80 years after the original is, it’s quite an honour,” she said.

“It didn’t come without any sort of pressure, but I put my heart and soul into it, and it’s an honour that Universal and Alex Kurtzman gave me those, that opportunity. So it’s a true honour.”

The latest “Mummy” opens in U.S. theatres on June 9.
