At least a third of British Airways (BA) flights from Heathrow have been cancelled as thousands of passengers were disrupted for a second day.

The cancellation of flights by the airline followed a global IT outage on Saturday, which caused large queues and congestion at London’s two biggest airports, Heathrow and Gatwick.

BA said terminals at Heathrow and Gatwick had become extremely congested because of the IT failure and all BA flights scheduled before 1700 GMT had been cancelled.

They apologised to customers for the challenge, which is thought to have been caused by a problem with the IT system’s power supply.

In a statement on Sunday, the Chief Executive Officer of BA, Alex Cruz, said: “I know this has been a horrible time for customers.

“We’re not there yet, but we are doing our very best to sort things out for you.”
