Sixth seed Thiem saved two set points in the first set of his 7-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory, his first win against his Serbian rival in six attempts.
The Austrian will face nine-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal for a place in the final.
The Spaniard’s opponent Pablo Carreno Busta retired on Wednesday while trailing 6-2, 2-0.
