The fire that swept through a 24-storey social housing block leaving scores dead started in a fridge-freezer, the police confirmed on Friday.

British authorities are now working with the manufacturer Hotpoint and carrying out tests of the model produced between 2006 and 2009.

Officials say that particular product had never been recalled before.

There has also been attention on the recently installed cladding at Grenfell Tower, home to some of London’s poorest residents in one of the capital’s wealthiest areas.

Samples of insulation and tiles were taken from the cladding on the building and both failed fire safety tests.

That information so concerning to police that it was immediately shared with the British government and every UK council.

All these fit into what London’s police say is one of the largest and most complex investigations they have ever carried out.

“We are looking at every criminal offence from manslaughter onwards. We are looking at every health and safety offence. We are reviewing every company involved in the building and refurbishment of Grenfell Tower,” Police Detective Superintendent, Fiona McCormack, said.

The number of people believed to have died remains at 79, although police stress it could be higher.

The UK Home Office says that the tragedy will not be used to check people’s immigration status.

That’s in the hope that some of those who may be too scared to provide information can be persuaded to come forward.
