The Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura is advocating the restructuring of three arms of government rather than the country in order to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

He was speaking when he received members of the Ahmadu Bello University alumni association at the council chambers of the government house in Lafia, the state capital.

“What should pre-occupy our minds as a nation that is gradually building capacity and entrenching democracy is to look at the system and how we can add value to it and rid it off adulteration and things that will becloud the true pursuit of democratic tenets.

“I believe we should look inwards, look at the arms of government and see how we can make them effective and functional rather than thinking about creating more states when there are no resources to support them. My take is to look at the three arms of government and see how we can tinker with them, reduce them or increase them depending on how they add value to the system.

“I find no sense and meaning having a bicameral legislature at the national level giving our challenges – I believe if we are taking senators, let’s take senators across the country and have representatives from every nook and cranny of the nation or to make it better we can take the House Of Representatives where every of the 774 local government areas should produce one member.

“This I believe will reduce tremendous amount of cost and it will make legislators focus to ensure that true democracy is practiced,” he added.
