Cross River Govt To Build 50 Housing Units For Bakassi IDPs

The Cross River State Government says it is set to commence the construction of 50 housing units for over 3,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Bakassi who have been camped in classrooms since their displacements.

The State Governor Ben Ayade hinted that the government has identified a large parcel of land at the bank of the river bothering Cross River State and Cameroon for the project.

He explained that the choice of the location for citing the project was to keep fate with the demands of the displaced persons to be resettled where they can freely have access to their major source of livelihood which is fishing.

Governor Ayade made the disclosure when he led a delegation on an inspection visit to the site of the proposed housing estate at Ifiang Ayong in Bakassi Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, the team is on ground to do a final survey and lay a foundation stone to start a proper construction of an estate aimed at meeting international standards with the support of the Federal Government for the Bakassi victims.

The governor urged the Federal Government to focus on giving hope and restoration to the Bakassi IDPs with same display of passion it has in dealing with issues surrounding oil rich communities in Nigeria.

The Paramount Ruler of Bakassi LGA, Etiyin Etim Edet, commended the development and expressed optimism that the location for the housing estate would correct several abnormalities surrounding the resettlement of the people.
