Barcelona have confirmed that Neymar’s lawyers have paid the Brazilian’s buyout clause to terminate his contract and free him for his record-breaking move to PSG.

In a statement, the club said, “On Thursday afternoon, Neymar Jr’s legal representatives visited in person the Club’s offices and made the payment of 222 million euros in the player’s name with regards to the unilateral termination of the contract that united both parties.

“As such, the Club will pass on to UEFA the details of the above operation so that they can determine the disciplinary responsibilities that may arise from this case.”

The transfer saga has dominated headlines in the past few days and stunned many in the football world, especially Barcelona fans.

Earlier today, it was reported that the record-breaking deal had been hit by a last-minute stoppage at the hands of Spain’s national soccer league when Neymar’s lawyers held talks with La Liga to pay the buyout fee.

A source from the Spanish league had said the body had rejected the payment.

La Liga President Javier Tebas previously warned the deal could be blocked as it might breach financial fair play rules set by European soccer governing body UEFA.

The transfer fee, which is double the 105 million euros Manchester United paid for Paul Pogba has attracted comments from major figures in the football world and beyond with French President Emmanuel Macron also commenting about it.
