Several Killed As Gunmen Attack Church In Anambra

Tragedy has struck in Anambra State as several persons have been reported killed by gunmen while worshipping at St. Philips Catholic Church in Ozubulu located in Ekusigo Local Government Area.

The identity of the attackers and their motive have not been established but security operatives are said to have swung into action to unravel the mystery behind the incident which took place on Sunday.

The state governor, Willie Obiano, called for calm as he visited the scene of the attack to commiserate with the parishioners.

Governor Obiano condemned the attack and promised to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Garba Baba Umar, also confirmed the attack to Channels Television.

‘Gang War’ Resulted In Church Attack, Says Anambra CP

He said many people were injured in the attack while some of the victims died on their way to the hospital.

“This morning at about 0620hrs, we received an information that some armed men invaded St. Philips Catholic Church in Ozubulu where the presiding priest was conduction an early morning mass. The assassins came in and started firing and in the process, some people were injured and were taken to hospital where some of them were confirmed dead”, Mr Umar added.

“At the moment, at the Nnewi Teaching Hospital, it was confirmed that eight persons were killed and three others died at another hospital which we have not ascertained but all in all, 11 persons lost their lives in this dastardly act.”
