The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has approved the payment of special bursary for visually impaired indigenes of the state studying in tertiary institutions.

Governor Obaseki gave the approval on Monday during a courtesy call by executive members of the state chapter of the Nigeria Association of the Blind (NAB) at the Government House in Benin City, the state capital.

He asked for a list of the names of NAB members studying in tertiary institutions, saying it would be forwarded to the State Ministry of Education to enable them to benefit from the scheme.

“Persons with disabilities are part of the society and it is obligatory on the part of government to ensure that their welfare is well taken care of.”

The governor further stressed the need to have an educational system of a high standard for persons living with disabilities.

He promised that a special education department would be established in either the College of Education, Abudu or the Tayo Akpata University of Education, Ekiadolor.

Obaseki also pledged his administration’s support for people living with disabilities and donated the sum of one million naira to the association.

He assured them that the state government would establish a Braille press to assist persons with visual impairment to transcribe normal script to the language they understand.

Earlier, Chairman of the state chapter of Nab, Nosakhare Asemota, commended the governor for the developmental strides of his administration, especially in the education sector.

Asemota said that the visit was to solicit the state government’s support in addressing some of the challenges confronting members of the association.
