Nigeria’s permanent representative at the African Union, Hajiya Raheemat Momodu has decried the low representation of women in Nigeria’s political space.

The African Union envoy who was the keynote speaker at a forum in Abuja, expressed concern over the continued decrease in the number of female politicians who occupy elective positions in the country.

According to the AU, one of the key issues in the amendment of the 1999 Constitution is the failure of the two chambers of the National Assembly to back the 35 per cent affirmative action for women as proposed by the United Nations.

It was noted that even out of the among the 109 senators in the Red chambers, there are only seven women, a far cry from the UN recommendation.

Momodu, therefore, urged women to organise themselves and ensure that the 35 per cent women representation in governance, is realized by 2019.
